A Life of Music

I only have recordings from two of my early bands.  ‘Quinn’ was a four-piece group that featured alternative rock rather than Top40.  Following that I played with ‘Can-Do,’  which was just the opposite., playing regularly and much more commercially.  After playing in my early bands, I withdrew from band involvement in 1983.. I served a ten-year stint in the U.S. Army Reserves and focused on involvement with my new, youngest daughter..

I resumed band involvement in 1999 with some 'Good Guys, from my younger days in Greenbelt. My most recent band is ‘The Relics,’ playing tunes from the late 60's and 70's    Keith Johnson, the lead singer, formed the group in 2015 from fellow members of Greenbelt Community Church . It was originally a one-time thing to raise funds for a church renovation.  The band jelled and was well-received and continues today.  I also continue solo work at home as well as jamming at The Old Bowie Towne Grille and occasionally sitting in with the host band 'The Low-Rent Quiartett.'    I have written and recorded new songs as well as selected covers.

I have always wanted to write and record solo, but I didn't have the time or adequate home-studio ability until the past few years. My original songs contain a full complement of instruments available from  keyboards with drums, bass, horns, flute or clarinet.     My vocals include backup and harmony using multiple tracks.  For strings I enlisted the help of Rachel Alexander (violin and viola) on three songs.  She is a music teacher and a performing violinist of the first degree.  I like to think that the highlight of my solo work is the sincerity of my writing and the emotion of my singing.  I am keen on rhythm and beat. In my keyboard work, I infuse variations on scales and chords.  I like to interweave keyboard lines for a full sound.  My covers are occasionally recorded ‘live’ with just my keyboard and the mic.

I am also a writer of local news items, mostly 'In Memorium' pieces where I seek to personalize the life of a friend or relation who has departed.  My son Will, who died in March of 2013 from complications of diabetes, was a writer as well. He wrote poems that I collected into a book entitled "The Advice of the Black Cat."  His uncle, 'Butch' Siehl provided drawings for many of the poems.  I will be posting some of the poems and accompanying artwork in the blogs along with a piece by me about Will and other 'stuff."
