A Life of Music

I only have recordings from two of my early bands.  Quinn was a four-piece group that included Tommy Hyland on guitar, Danny Keegan on bass and the late  Donald "Duckie" Corcoran on drums.  After playing in my early bands, I withdrew from band involvement..  During this period , I served a ten-year stint in the U.S. Army Reserves.

After a 16-year hiatus that included family activities and a 10-year stint in the U.S. Army Reserves, I resumed band involvement with some 'The Good Guys, from my younger days in Greenbelt. My most recent band was 'The Relics,.'formed with members of Greenbelt Community Church, playing tunes from the late 69's and 70's    Keith Johnson, the lead singer, formed the group in 2015 from fellow members of Greenbelt Community Church . It was originally a one-time thing to raise funds for a church renovation.  The band jelled and was well-received and continues today, but no longer with me. (I guess they can dump the name 'Relics.')  I retired from active performance in formal bands in December 2018.  Other members include: Doug Tull (drums); Mark (bass and vocals) and Liisa Granfors-Hunt (vocals); Tom Davey (guitar, harmonica and vocals; Elliot Davey (flute and vocals) and later Tom Gill (lead guitar) and Jim Tilton, vocals, and then keyboard to replace me). 'The Relics" perform mostly rock and pop tunes from the 1970s. Today I keep active on solo work at home, as well as jamming at The Old Bowie Towne Grille and occasionally sitting in with the host band 'The Low-Rent Quintet.'    I have written and recorded new songs as well as selected covers.

I have always wanted to write and record solo, but I didn't really have the time or good home studio ability until the past few years. Each song  on "It's Just Me" contains a full complement of instruments available from my two keyboards with drums, bass, and horns, flute or clarinet.  My vocals include backup and harmony using multiple tracks.  For strings I enlisted the help of Rachel Alexander (violin and viola) on three songs.  She is a music teacher and a performing violinist of the first degree.  I like to think that the highlight of my solo work is the sincerity of my writing and the emotion of my singing.  I am keen on rhythm and beat in my piano keyboard work infuse variations on scales and chords.  I like to interweave keyboard lines for a full sound.

I am also a writer of local news items, mostly 'In Memorium' pieces where I seek to personalize the life of a friend or relation who has passed on.  My son Will, who departed this life in March of 2013 from complications of diabetes, was a writer as well. He wrote poems that I collected into a book entitled "The Advice of the Black Cat."  His uncle, 'Butch' Siehl provided drawings for many of the poems.  I will be posting some of the poems and accompanying artwork in the blogs along with a piece by me about Will and other 'stuff."
